How can I create my own ringtones for my phone?

I have a sprint Katana. From what I understand, if I get a program for my computer, I can creat my own ringtones then email them to my phone... HOW ON EARTH DOES THAT WORK?

1. go to Ventones(.com) works on that phone(katana) always works for me , and its really easy and free they have ringtones or you can create your own..really cool they also have wallpapers,slideshows,animations

3. The http://makeownringtone.com site allows you to cut out a portion of your MP3 and make it into a ringtone - and it's free.
4. the katana takes a different format, you need to make it qcp format. you can do that on VENTONES thats where i go for my katana ringtones. use their Phone Uploader to convert the ringtone from mp3 to qcp.
