How do you make your own ringtones/get them for free from a website?

I thought making your own ringtone is cool and I'd like to make one. I tried going to those 'make your own ringtones' websites and I noticed that you have to sign up and punch in your cell #. I'm sort of intimidated that they might keep texting me or something. Do the websites that give you free ringtones actually work? Exactly how does it work? How do I know if it not a scam? What website/program do you use to get your ringtone? [i have a virgin mobile aloha cell phone]

1. If you went to myxer.com, then its 100% free and they dont blow your phone up with text message advertisements. They just need your number to send the ringtone to.. Nothing else. Also try, www.funformobile.com. Good luck
2. ventones its the safest site ive used, you can make your own ringtones, been doing it for a while now, so don't worry, no spam, nothing you can also convert the format, online, right on their site, in case your phone takes a different format instead of mp3. one of my phones only takes drm protected files and they convert it before sending it to my phone. thats something i havent found anywhere else. but, for your virgin mobile phones, you will need to buy a bluetooth adapter and load the ringtone yourself. because virgin mobile ( i started with those) does not allow ringtone downloads from other sites. you will be able to download the ringtone but not store it. you can make your own from the studio at virgin mobile.
