Sony Ericsson W580i...using my music as ringtones?

If you own a Sony Ericsson walkman (W580i) could you please tell me why my phone won't let me use my mp3 music as ringtones? I saved all my music under the Ringtones folder, as MP3s. why won't the phone let me select a song as my ringtone??

1. think it needs to be in a different format, or might be that the file size is too big. Ventones is a site you can use to make short versions of the mp3 file, and then they send it to your phone in a picture mms message. Its free, been making all my ringtones that way for a long time.
