Download totally free ringtones

When downloading free ringtones off of ventones site how do you make regular songs into MP3 songs?

I tried to download my music from my computer but it was not an "MP3" file so it would not work. How do I make my music an MP3 file? I am unfamiliar with this process when concerning cell phone ringtone transfers.
